Craft Central // St. Patrick’s Day

About a week ago, my parents’ basement freezer died.  As they were moving everything from the deceased freezer to the new one they found our wedding cake.  You know – the one you are supposed to eat on your first wedding anniversary?  Zach and I never got around to it and then each year it continued to go on forgotten.  My parents gave me an ultimatum:  come get the cake or we will chuck it.  In fear of breaking tradition, I picked it up Monday night and took it home.  Then we ate it.  Four and a half years later.  It actually didn’t taste that bad.  The texture of the cake was off, but the frosting was actually very good!  45 minutes later…only one of us got violently ill.  That someone was me.  I figure it was a small sacrifice to make considering it is supposed to give you luck in your marriage over your lifetime.

I have zero Easter decor for my house.  I have bins and bins for Halloween and Christmas, but nothing for Easter.  I bought an MDF letter at Micheal’s on sale a few months ago along with a moss table runner.  I had seen tutorials for moss letters all over Pinterest and didn’t want to pay $79 for Pottery Barn’s gorgeous moss monograms, so I decided to make my own.  It was a pretty easy DIY craft, but incredibly messy!

Then I found speckled robin eggs in the dollar section of Target.  Another craft was born.

As if I hadn’t done enough crafting already…my mom and I made a baby shower gift for my cousin.  We made silouhettes of her and her husband (and will make one for baby when she comes) to go in her ultra feminine nursery.  We wanted white round frames – but they are almost impossible to find in a regular size and at a decent price.  So we found clocks at Wal-Mart in the perfect size and converted those into shadow box frames.  Super easy – super economical.

Friday night we went to dinner in Sandy with my family and some long-time family friends at Los Cucos.  We love the Caywoods and Swensons – it was so fun to get together and catch up.

IMG_0437

I also adore the Swenson children.  It’s impossible not to love that face…

Saturday was the day of the cousin’s baby shower.  It was a tea party theme:  we had fruit kabobs and my aunt’s delicious chicken salad sandwiches. My grandparents had 31 grandchildren.  31 grandchildren makes a lot of great-grandchildren.  It’s official:  I am the oldest married granddaughter without a baby.

Saturday night Zach and I went out to dinner and movie with Zach’s sister Gina and our brother-in-law Kelly.  We got to briefly hang out with their girls before it was time to head off to our dinner reservation at Tona.

IMG_0455

We love Tona.  They have some of our very favorite rolls and the best garlic edamame.

Sunday Zach and I were asked to sub in primary for the six and seven-year-olds.  The topic was Baptism.  We had our friend ‘Froggy’ come help us teach the class.  The kids were obsessed with him.  Zach was quite fond of him as well…

After church we drove down to West Jordan for my cousin’s St. Patrick’s Day party.  We were told to wear green – and took it to the next level.  Literally every article of clothing [with the exception of Zach’s shoes] were a shade of green.  Fifty Shades of Green, if you will…

We had a traditional Irish feast of corned beef and cabbage + green rolls, cake bites, and mint ice cream.  Even my brother joined us – who had been in Moab for the weekend jumping off arches [literally, jumped off Corona Arch – the ‘world’s largest rope swing’.]  I was glad he returned home from his adventure in one piece so our entire family could be all together for the holiday.

Hope you all had a fantastic St. Patty’s Day!!

The Big FIVE [#41] [#18] [#37] [#31] [#9]

Five items.  Five items checked off our 50 Days of SUMMER list.  [I knew it would consume our weekends, but I had no idea we would be having THIS much fun!]

Zach had an ice hockey game at the U and Zach’s parents came to watch with me! It was the most dramatic hockey game I’ve ever been to…Zach’s team’s goalie was ejected from the ice within the first two minutes of the game! So they had to play the remainder of the game with no goalie…which resulted in a loss for their team. We had fun visiting and watching Zach skate his heart out, though!

Zach and I had a lunch date at The Park Cafe. It was a bit chilly, so we opted to dine inside. The food was fantastic and we enjoyed a very rare week day lunch conversation. I hope to have more lunch dates with my husband in the future, but I fear that will only happen when I am not working.

I tried kale and wheatgrass shots. Or “green shots” as the healthy people call them. I am now sticking to green smoothies, much better than green shots. Several people asked me what it tasted like, and to be honest…it tasted like I went in my front yard, put my face down in my grass…and licked the grass. Like liking pure grass.

I went out to eat with some ladies in my neighborhood to Sawadee. Delicious as always, and we even had the mangoes and sticky rice for dessert!

[Glad I am not standing next to Trisha, Amazon Woman!]

I met up with my Logan/USU Design friends for a bite at the Blue Lemon at City Creek. I know…two nights in a row eating out with my friends. It was my first time and it was delicious! Not to mention I got to make a few quick stops on my way out at the shops at City Creek [trying to make a dent in the gift card selection that was recently rediscovered].

We went to Zach’s roller hockey championship game down in West Valley. They were victorious! Two years in a row of Zach being on a championship roller hockey team. I also got to hang out with my long lost sister-in-law [who is here from Philadelphia] and her family at the game, it is so nice to have them back for a while!

[Accepting their trophy!!!]

Us ladies accomplished a 50 Days of SUMMER item…#41 – Girls’ Craft Night! My aunt, cousins, and myself helped my mom do some projects for Girls’ Camp. It was so nice to see my cute cousins and chat with them.

[Don’t be jealous of my REO Speed Wagon shirt I borrowed from my Dad!]

We ordered pizza, talked, and tried delicious Jolly Rancher suckers my cousins made.

I even finished up my asymmetrical maxi skirt! My Aunt Patty let me borrow her supplies and I did it all by myself people. I can sew. Not GREAT, but I can sew.

I was in charge of our neighborhood Ice Cream Social at our splash pad. Just in time for the weather to get really warm again, too!  I wore my skirt and it was SO comfortable.  I am going to have to make another!

Yes, that’s almost 400 pieces of ice cream in our car. Zach also hung out with his baby BFF, Millie.

After the activity was over, Zach and I grabbed a bite to eat before his 10:00 pm ice hockey game down at the Oval. We accomplished #18 – Eat at Cucina Toscana.  Many of my friends had been telling me how incredible it was and we had been trying to go for months. Finally, it happened.

No lie, the food was some of the best I have had in Utah. The only thing we didn’t like about the whole experience…was the bill. Definitely not somewhere we could go too often, but I understand why people go there for special events and anniversaries!  I loved the atmosphere and how they plated your food right in front of you as well.  A large table next to use ordered fish, so the restaurant owner brought out the fish for the guests to see before he served it to them.  The whole cooked fish – eyes, skin, and all!  After dinner we went to Zach’s ice hockey game – they won by 4 goals!

We accomplished all of our Saturday errands in time to make an appointment for #37 – Get pedicures [both of us]. Zach was super skeptical but his feet needed it…bad. Hockey and Classic Water Slide injuries over the past few years have left him with some disgusting bruised and broken toenails.  He acted uncomfortable the whole time, but I know he loved it, secretly.

After our pedicures we decided to do #31 – Sushi and a Dollar Movie, just like old times when we were dating. We ate some amazing sushi at Tsunami in Sugarhouse and then watched an early flick.

We decided to walk around down town after – with a quick stop at the Green Ant and some other small boutique stores.

[Singing my favorite songs in his ear…all night long.  I don’t know how he puts up with me.]

We even ventured into the new Harmon’s at City Creek where we purchased ingredients for our Sunday Dinner.

Towards the later part of the night, we made a perfect compromise. I would watch the Pacquiao fight if he ran me to Coldstone for a “fight refreshment”. I can watch anything with a cup full of ice cream.

After church on Sunday we drove down to my parents’ house.  My dad is out of town on business for almost three weeks, so we decided to make my Mom and brother dinner.  Plus, it was crossing a FIFTH item off our list this weekend…#9 – Family BBQ.

We had kabobs, twice baked potatoes, Texas Roadhouse rolls, fruit, and my Grandpa’s homemade zucchini bread.  We ended the night visiting and lounging, too full to move.

Last year we barely put a dent in our summer list, and this year…we are taking it pretty seriously.  This weekend was a blast – can’t wait to see what next weekend brings!

DIY ’till I die

I think I get it from my Mother.  My refusal to buy something if I know I can make it for a better price.  And it doesn’t help I have an unhealthy obsession with anything neon lately.

On my lunch break on Monday I made a journey to the nearby Walmart and spotted three glorious colors of neon spray paint.  I wasn’t leaving without them.

I saw this necklace on Bauble a while ago (the top image) but didn’t want to pay the full price…so I decided to go get some supplies for our Family Night on Monday.  Jazz Game, dinner, and DIY Fashion projects.

I made the same necklace for $5 (the bottom image) – just some inexpensive chain from the craft store and some neon spray paint!  I had plenty of spray paint left, so I decided to spray an outdated necklace as well.

[Before and After – the color looks much better in person, BTW]

But I didn’t stop…

I sprayed little metal buckets, decorations for an upcoming shower, and a pair of old earrings.  And I even used some of my extra over-sized chain to make a bracelet.

I was on a DIY roll.

Along with my neon problem, I also have a Maxi skirt issue.  So, since I have a sewing machine now…I have no excuse for that not being my next project.  But to switch it up, I am going to try this tutorial – for an assymetrical maxi.

Wish me luck!  One thing I did NOT inherit from my mother was her sewing skillz.

The Creepy Neighbors

Zach really wasn’t bugged with any of my strange Halloween Decor until he came home and saw the bottles of “Freshly Extracted Nails” and “Maiden’s Hair” on the dining room table.  Now I have a strange decorating blog.

“Is that REAL HAIR KATIE!?” Even after I told him it was fake hair from my Snookie costume last year, he didn’t feel right about it.  So last night I turned off the flickering candles in the window and decided to play it cool until it is a little later on in the Holiday Season.  I think Zach finally understands my obsession with Halloween and he wants to protect me from looking like the Wicked Witch of the west.

Too late, I guess? The flickering candles in the window were a little much, I do admit…

Justifying

Well…

I made it until Sep. 24th.  Does that count?  I realize it is not even October yet, but I don’t care.  Zach came home from hockey and said, “Wow, our house looks SPOOKY!”  Translation:  “Honestly Katie, crow feathers?”

Yes.  Crow feathers.

It’s officially the Henderson Haunted House.

Kitchy Crafty

I am not a “crafter”.  Being the computer nerd that I am, when I see something scrapbook-y (yes, it’s a word) or fabric-y…I immediately envision how I can recreate it on the computer.  I know…nerdy.

This weekend (week rather…he left Wed morning) Zach went on a road trip with his friends Clay, Adam, and Chet.  Clay got accepted into med school at Ohio State, and leaves this Thursday.  So naturally, they wanted to do one last boys’ trip together.  TENDER.  So Zach was gone for 5 days, then my family left for Lava Hot Springs, and Zach’s whole family went to Lake Powell.  So I made my usual “List” for the weekend and got to work.

I hung my new velvet curtains in my bedroom (yes…way sexy).

I ordered all of our new large and in charge bedding – we had to buy a king size duvet and pillows considering we upgrade in royalty sizes.

I did all the laundry and cleaned the house, and got really bored of all that stuff pretty quick.

SO…I hung all the frames in our office, which have been leaning against the wall for months.  This was the start of my problem this weekend.  I was way upset when I realized I purchased a frame from Michaels and the glass was cracked, in two places.  So I went back to the store to return it.  OF COURSE they said they couldn’t refund my money or let me exchange it for a new frame…because they claimed that I couldn’t prove that it was BEFORE I took it home.  Lame.  BUT they did give me in-store credit (but it wasn’t enough to cover the EXACT frame that I needed – don’t even get me started.  Michael’s is on my shiz list).  So thanks to Pinterest, and the fact that my husband had been gone, I decided I was going to make a few pieces of jewelry I had seen on there with my extra cash-ola credit.  So instead of a gorgeous frame, I left that stupid institution with bags of beads, wire, clasps, and some things called “crimping beads”??  I have never made jewelry before in my life, I was so confused by all the gadgetry.  But I was on a mission.  I even enlisted some friends the first day and I made these bad boys: Decided to post them to my DIY Blog.

I have to say that the Chevron Friendship bracelets were one of my favorite to make, and the easiest.  I went a little overboard, and over the weekend (and time period Zach was gone during the week) I watched my favorite shows and made 8 chevron bracelets in Bad-A colors!

Some projects were more difficult than others, and to be honest I saved some of the more difficult ones for last…which was foolish because my friends had much more knowledge in jewelry-making than I did and they weren’t as passionate at getting them ALL done as I was.

I get really lonely when Zach is gone, so I try to keep myself as busy as possible so I don’t have to think about how much I miss him.  I have decided these little “projects” are my way of keeping distracted and I am already making a list of new things I want to replicate when he leaves for the next convention and/or Man Adventure.

Speaking of adventures, Zach and his friends had quite the week in St. George > Vegas > California.  They didn’t make it to Mexico (thank Heaven above, I was praying it wouldn’t happen.  A little gringo like Zach would get snatched up in a second.) but they did get COMPED at a SUITE at the Venetian for two nights and Zach came home with a pretty decent bundle of cash from his winnings at the tables.  I don’t love him gambling, but I wasn’t super upset when he brought me home my dream watch from the rest of his winnings.

Ah, the spoils of victory.  I was totally cool with him gambling just this ONE time.  WHAT?  Don’t judge me!

All in all, I’d say it was a pretty killer week and weekend.
