Thanksgiving

It’s weird to think about, but this has been our first Thanksgiving home in six years!  Even though it was different being home instead of out of town celebrating our anniversary, different is sometimes even better…

We had Sloan’s newborn photos the day before Thanksgiving.  She was snoozing the majority of the time and I am hoping the photographer captured a few with her eyes open.  I still have to wake her up to eat at night.  Poor thing hates to be disturbed while she is zoned out, but the girl has got to beef up!

Thursday we elected to stay home for Thanksgiving day.  We were planning on going to the Hendo cabin for dinner, but with 25 grandkids we figured it would be smarter to stay home and stay healthy.  But we weren’t alone the whole day.  My parents, brother, and sister-in-law came to visit us for lunch.  We had pizza and picked our way through the Black Friday adds.

That afternoon Sloan and I cooked Thanksgiving dinner.  I was elated that I didn’t mess everything up for our first Thanksgiving as a family of three.  Granted that the stuffing was Stovetop and we ate with Cafe Rio silverware…but we are calling it a victory because nothing was burned or tasted foul!

Even the pie, which I had to battle for at the grocery store because it was the LAST one, turned out ok!

Zach’s sister dropped of this hilarious onesie before dinner.  So thanks to Lori, my daughter was festive for her very first holiday.

Friday I ventured to Target for a little bargain shopping, but wasn’t looking for anything in particular and left with sheets.  Like we need another pair of neutral sheets around this house…

Zach spent his day off from work snowboarding at Park City.  He put his new pole [his “new dad” gift he asked for] to good use in the park.

Saturday we got our family Christmas card photos taken by the sweet and talented Erin Burk.  She was so sweet to put up with us and our (ok, this was MY idea, Zach was not so into it) theme for the card.  I can’t wait to see how they turned out!

Later that night Zach took Sloan and I to Em’s Restaurant up by the capital.  It was my first time and it did not disappoint.  It is such a cute and quiet restaurant.  Sloan slumbered next to me in her car seat the entire time.  It was the perfect place to take her out with us.  There were only a few other groups at the restaurant.  Two out of the four tables asked to come see her.  The reaction we got when they realized she was just two weeks old was pretty hilarious.  People find it very odd that Zach and I are taking her with us everywhere, but we figure that WE are goers…so Sloan is going to have to keep up eventually.

IMG_0338

I am so grateful for so many things this holiday.  The support from our family and friends throughout this whole process welcoming Sloan into our family has completely floored me.  I am so lucky to have my husband.  He is such an incredible partner and parent already.  I am beyond blessed to have an angel in our home every day.  She doesn’t always smell like an angel, but everything else is heavenly.  Sloan has made the two of us a real eternal family, and for that I will never be able to repay her.  She is our little BFF already and I can’t wait to share more experiences with her and make millions of memories.

Food // Full Term // Fall Festivities

This week my nesting has escalated to a whole new level!  Pregnancy has taught me more than I would have ever thought it would.  I have always known I was a planner, that’s beyond obvious.  But the thought of not knowing when baby will come is kind of unsettling.  So, in my own twisted way, being as prepared as possible is my way of planning and having some sort of control over my situation.  Because when she shows up and how she shows up is totally NOT up to me.  So, amongst a few other things, I made some more freezer meals / treats.  First I did some smoothie packets [I did this whilst training for the Bear Lake Brawl and loved using them] with spinach, avocado, and apples.  I don’t want to have any excuses when it comes to eating healthy after she comes.  Besides, I wanna be a pro breastfeeder and know that good nutrition is huge.  So we’ll see how this whole thing goes!

smoothie packets

Tuesday morning I dragged myself to the gym.  It didn’t end up being a total waste, though because I ran a 5K!  I planned to run 2 miles and just kept going.  I was so thrilled when I saw the number on the treadmill that I started to cry.  This has happened before, obviously, but not to this extent.  I think BAWLING would be a better description for my reaction.  Instantly, within a minute, I had two ladies on either side of the treadmill asking if everything was alright.  An older woman that I see often around that time of day was very concerned.  She wanted to know if she should call my husband (or 911) to come and get me.  It was super sweet.  Super embarrassing, but super sweet.  They both laughed when they found out that I was crying out of pure joy for accomplishing one of my pregnancy goals.

running

During the run I felt great, but afterwards my stomach turned to complete concrete!  It was the most intense Braxton Hicks contraction I have had thus far.  I took it easy for the rest of the day working from home on my laptop.  Zach also left Tuesday to go to a jet convention in Florida.  I made dinner for myself some of the nights he was gone and made a double batch of everything to freeze.  Chicken enchiladas, taco soup, homemade basil pasta sauce (I discovered if I cooked a whole crap load of angel hair pasta – al dente – all I have to do is add the sauce packets to it in a pan and it is the easiest pasta dish eva!)…

I also made a new healthy white cheese and spinach macaroni bake – which Zach will probably hate – but it’s worth a try!

The night Zach left I had a little progression as far as the pregnancy goes.  A few weeks prior I had gone to Walmart and purchased an old-person bed protector.  Zach and I are super obsessed with our mattress and the thought of pregnancy juice soaked all up in it when my water breaks makes me cringe.  I had a weird feeling to put it on my mattress when I changed the sheets on Wednesday night.  A few hours later I had a super glam pre-term labor sign in which NOBODY cares about other than myself because it means I am only getting closer to meeting this nugget.  My water didn’t break, but it could be on the verge as of now.  Zach called me from his hotel and I told him what happened.  He contemplated coming home, just in case, but I encouraged him to stay as planned until Friday.  It could still be days (or weeks?) before anything else progresses further.  Luckily I had an appointment with my OB Friday where I could get a little more insight…

Wednesday was Activity Days.  We had a Halloween Party and made spooky treats:  eyeballs, witch hats, and witch brooms.  The girls got to take the left-over treat supplies home, which I think they liked better than actually making the treats.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

Afterwards I drove down to Taylorsville to have dinner with my parents.  My brother even came over to visit with us on his way home from duck hunting.  We made a game plan in case my labor signs progressed while Zach was still gone.  If I started to have contractions and it was night time my parents would drive me to the hospital.  If it happened during the day time, my brother would drive me to the hospital because his work warehouse is 10 minutes away from my home.  It was so cute to see how excited they all were about my progress.  Even during the prayer where we blessed our meal, my dad prayed that the babe would be safe and all would be well with her.  When we all opened our eyes my parents were both crying their eyes out.  We all can’t wait to meet her!

The rest of the week I kept myself distracted by finishing up some work projects and deep cleaning the house.  I also got to go to dinner to celebrate my friend Jenn’s birthday with her and Lindsey.  The three of us went to Macaroni Grill and did a little shopping at Fashion Place.  A month late, but regardless…we loved celebrating with Jenn!  She is wonderful and deserves a fantastic belated birthday.

Screen Shot 2014-10-23 at 10.23.21 PM

Friday I had my OB appointment first thing in the morning and didn’t really know what to expect.  I am not dilated yet but this babe is LOW.  As soon as she checked me my doc said, “Well there’s the baby’s head, I am touching it right now.”  I couldn’t believe it!  So no standard progress, but at least the baby is settled down into position.  My doc also is making me get another growth ultrasound.  This request didn’t make me as nervous as the first one.  They weighed and measured me like they do at every appointment and my belly hadn’t grown since the week prior.  I am not measuring on track, so I’m being sent back.  But I am not worried because I know baby girl is lodged deep back in me – I can tell by her kicks!  I am excited to see her on screen again.  Usually people don’t get to have as many ultrasounds as we have had, so I am feeling grateful.

I was super relieved when Zach got home Friday.  We spent the rest of the night together doing baby errands, getting food to go, and watching football and a movie back at home.  I wanted to take it easy considering we had a crazy day on Saturday.

Along with all the baby stuff happening I have wanted to be super prepared for Christmas this year.  I have been asking Zach what he has wanted for Christmas this year and he would only keep repeating himself, “snowboard gear”.  So Saturday we went out for fish tacos [surprise, surprise] and went and did some Christmas shopping for him and other family members.

photo 1

Later, Zach also got all the items done on my list for him for around the house.  Poor guy.  He hates going to Lowe’s, but we needed some filters replaced and other little jobs done before she comes.  I finished deep cleaning the house while he was working away.

Then we were off to the Utah Blackout Game!  We went out to eat beforehand down town and then made our way up to the stadium with the hoards of people.  I must admit – I gave Zach such a hard time for purchasing these season tickets this year because I knew I would be 8 months pregnant when the season started and I thought it would be a total waste.  BUT these seats are so great [and seats really do beat the bleachers that we have been sitting on for the past 3 years] and I will never doubt him again!

photo 2

photo-76

It was an intense game!  The crowd was going crazy and baby girl was getting just as rowdy inside of my belly.  I don’t know if the noise was getting her all riled up or if it was my stress/excitement of the last quarter making her go nuts.  Either way, she endured her first of many future Blackout games and we left with a victory!

Sunday after church was our annual Henderson Halloween Party at Classic Skating in Layton.  There was soup in pumpkin bread bowls, pumpkin carving…

photo 1

…and a visit from Skeletor – aka uncle Zach.

photo 4

The lights went down and Skeletor emerged from behind the video games on a scooter.  Then there was a breakdancing contest with all the kiddos.  Some are still terrified of Skeletor, but others got really into it.  Especially Georgia.

photo 3

Awards were also given out for the pumpkin carving contest.  Best eyelashes, most colorful, and so on…

photo 2

We loved spending the night with the Hendersons at our annual Halloween Party.  Zach and I didn’t carve pumpkins.  We figured this was the last year we could get away with not doing them.  Next year we’ll have a one-year-old that will get to experience all that is a Hendo Halloween.

36 weeks and feeling great!  As I type this I am technically 37 weeks, like always – I am a week behind, but that means I am full term!  A friend of mine from high school and his wife were due on the same exact day as I was.  She had her baby earlier in the week.  My sister-in-law, Siri, had her baby on Saturday [Henderson grandchild #24] and both mom and babe are doing great.  I feel so blessed to have been able to carry this baby girl until she reached full term.  I have heard my share of scary situations lately and am just thankful she stayed in until her dad got home from his convention across the country.  We will take her whenever she is ready.  Be it at 37 weeks or 40+ weeks…we’re game!

34 // Shower Power

Zach and I have started a little tradition.  At least until the baby comes.  M and M – Mexican and a movie.  Tuesday nights we go get Mexican [fulfills a current craving and Zach never minds] and go to a $5 Tuesday movie at the Cinemark.  It’s a win-win for both of us.  This week we went to Lonestar for some red snapper fish tacos.

We were also the only ones in the theater – which meant we could lounge out and had the best seats in the house!

Wednesday was my Henderson family shower at my sister-in-law Gina’s house.  My mother-in-law and sister-in-laws went all out!  They decorated the house from top to bottom in the most darling Halloween decor.  It was a “Welcome Little Ghoul” theme.  My only assignment was to wear a pumpkin shirt…

photo 2

The food was delicious and baby girl got seriously hooked up with some amazing gifts!  Darling and beautiful clothes and awesome gadgets.  Babies come with a lot of gadgets, I have discovered.  Also, not pictured, were the amazing favors Aunt Wendy and her daughters made – Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory apple pie caramel apples.  They were darling!

The Hendersons have done so much for Zach and I.  We feel we can’t express our gratitude for the support that we have received.  I am so lucky to have married into such an incredible family…

photo 4

Thursday was my neighborhood/ward shower thrown by my two neighbors and BFFs.  Lindsey hosted it at her house and her and Jenn went all out with the most darling theme and decor!  The colors matched baby girl’s nursery, they had a crepe bar for refreshments, and the favors were French macarons!

I get super emotional when I think about these two.  People ask me why I love living in North Salt Lake so much.  The location is great, yes, but the people are what have made this neighborhood so amazing.  Jenn and Lindsey have blessed my life so much already.  They answer my awkward mom-to-be questions, give great advice, and make me feel like I have two amazing people in my corner always.  I love them.

IMG_3287

So many sweet women in my ward showed up, even some that used to be in the ward before they moved away and before our giant ward split.

IMG_3291

I got some very useful and practical gifts [which I am so grateful for] because I seriously have no idea what I am doing!  Any advice – and an ice pack from Trishia – was so appreciated!

IMG_3295

My sweet friends from up north also came, which meant so much!

IMG_3296

IMG_3303

I hope one day I can repay all these amazing women in my ward for all they have done for me!  I love living in Foxboro.

Friday Zach had a whole evening planned for us in Park City.  He surprised me by getting off work a little early, taking me to the outlets, and taking a ride up to the resort to see the changing leaves.

IMG_3309

That night we dined at the Grill at the St. Regis – one of the best meals I have had in a long time.  If you have a chance to go, please get the fried mac n’ cheese.  You won’t regret it.  Zach got that along with a giant pork chop.  I got a hawaiian fish over spaghetti squash.  Even though we never order dessert, we ordered the salted caramel sundae [with popcorn] and ate the entire thing.

Saturday morning was my Fotheringham family shower at my Aunt Sharon’s house.  Sharon made this adorable diaper cake with the cutest headband and shoes on top!

IMG_3328

IMG_3329

Instead of a game, my family members decorated pages of an ABC book to be laminated and given to baby girl!  It was such a fun idea and I am sure she will love looking at all the hand-drawn pictures.  I got “D” and drew a picture of Zach for “DAD”.

IMG_3331

The rest of Saturday was spent running errands.  I had some gift cards to spend and Zach braved Target and Walmart with me to get some last minute things on our baby list.  We dined at Setebello afterwards in Farmington and afterwards grabbed a bag of movie theater popcorn [Zach’s dessert].

34 weeks done and gone.  Two more weeks [because apparently you aren’t full term until 37 weeks nowadays] until I am full term and five weeks until my due date.  I really can’t complain about pregnancy at all.  My symptoms compared to others are nothing.  Other than the occasional tongue and lips numbness and bulging veins, things are great.  I’d rather have bulging veins than swelling, to be honest, so I can’t even count that as a bad symptom.  And I am sure Zach secretly loves when my tongue and lips go numb.  He gets a break from his chatterbox wife every now and then.  I have, however, decided to take a real break for “maternity leave”.  Although I work from home and have my own schedule, I’ve decided to do a couple weeks of radio silence.  AKA email silence.  I feel like baby girl and I will only benefit from it and it will give me some time to figure out what the hey I need to do to get this whole mom thing down.  I will have plenty of time later to catch up on emails and work projects.  Bringing a new baby home only happens once [or a few times, I guess] in your life.  I’m going to enjoy it!

Gonna Be a Mummy // 33

This is my absolute favorite time of the year.  It’s starting to cool down, there is pumpkin flavored everything, and all is a little bit cozier.  We spent a lot of time this week with family because of General Conference weekend and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Mid week I had a lunch date with my grandpa and cousins at Johnniebeefs.  My grandpa is obsessed with this place.  He says the hot dogs are authentic, just like the ones he had in Chicago in 1945.  Unfortunately, I opted out and got a chicken burger.  But they looked delicious!

I also spent some time each night this week washing baby girl’s clothes, blankets, and sheets.  It took hours.  Probably the most time consuming part of prepping for baby so far.  It didn’t help that I have been a little exsessive in the clothing department.  Zach and I put the rest of her room together between conference sessions.  Now all we need in that crib is a little person…

photo 2

We also went out twice this week on a date to dinner and a movie – once again, trying to get those date nights in before she comes is one of Zach’s priorities.

Saturday while all the men were at Preisthood Session we had my Pollock/Ross family shower.  It was a “mummy-to-be” theme and everyone dressed up!  My aunt and cousins made all this delicious food and had everything completely decked out in Halloween decor.  It was so much fun and baby girl was spoiled again.  Not only with amazing hand-made gifts but with pumpkin cupcakes (her and I had two).

IMG_3206

My favorite costumes were my mom’s cousins (my second cousins) who dressed up as biker chicks!  They wore all that leather the majority of the night, which alone was impressive!

IMG_3212

I love my family and am once again humbled by the support they have shown Zach and I.  I couldn’t ask for better people in my life.

Sunday was lazy and glorious.  No make-up and dressed in our “comfy cozies” – that’s what my nieces call pajamas.  I let Zach sleep in until the first session of conference while I worked on a person project.  It will eventually be for baby girl.  I haven’t done any watercolor for a while and Sunday morning was the perfect time to get going on it.  My skills are rusty, but I enjoyed it so much.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

Sunday afternoon my mom and dad came over to our house for the last session of conference.  We listened while folding all of the bambino’s clothes that I had spent all week washing.

photo 2

After the session the guys turned on the 49ers game as quickly as possible and my mom and I finished up dinner.  We had manicotti – Zach’s request – and pumpkin chocolate chip cookies for dessert.  We also did an estimated arrival date for baby girl.  Each family member [including Zach’s parents via text message] guessed a date.  If Zach or I win, we get to be taken out for dinner.  If anyone else wins, we take them out to dinner – the three of us!

Please notice my own father’s date – Nov. 25th.  That puts me at 41 weeks and when I will have an induction scheduled, most likely, if I go that long.  Thank you to everyone else who had a little mercy on me.  Zach seems to think that if my due date is the 18th, she will come on the 18th and that day only.

Week 33.  Seems like work stuff and baby stuff have consumed my life lately, as it should.  I spend my daytime hours working on freelance and other work projects and my afternoons and evenings [with Zach’s help] setting up all the baby swag.  I have this mega master baby-to-do checklist and there are not very many things left on it.  In less than a month I will full-term and it’s tripping me out!

Here’s to being 8 and a half months knocked up tomorrow!  34 weeks, here I come!

This year for our Hendo Girls’ Trip we had two pregnant chicks:  Siri and myself.  Siri is due two weeks before me.  Out of consideration for us “knocked-ups” they decided to do an earlier excursion.  We usually go in November when the boys are hunting, but since Siri will already have a newborn by then [she is having an induction date scheduled sometime soon], we planned it for September.  Last year we went to Chicago and we loved it so much we decided to go somewhere new again!  Charleston, South Carolina was the lucky host city.

It is a special place to Zach’s sister Lori – two of her birth mothers [Lola’s birth mom and Will’s birth mom] were from Charleston.  None of us had ever been and we were elated to explore a new place!

IMG_2841

Traveling while pregnant is sexy, no?  I’ve never felt more egg-shaped in my life!

IMG_2842

We arrived around 4:00 local time.  The street on which we were staying was closed down to regular traffic for a little shopping and dining event.  It was so much fun to see all the people out and about.

IMG_2828

We shopped for a bit before heading out for our dinner reservation.  It was my first time experiencing southern food.  Shrimp and grits – definitely worth trying!

Our first full day we went on a walking history tour of Charleston.  Our darling tour guide, Palmer, showed us around.  We learned a little bit about the Civil War, saw a lot of historic architecture, and even spotted some familiar landmarks [and when I say landmarks, I mean movie scenery and set locations].

Side Note:  Charleston is humid.  Hot and humid.  The first day was so much so that we all basically wore work-out attire.  I brought one of the only dri-fit shirts that actually fits these days – which happens to be a peachy color.  I deemed myself “Katie and the Giant Peach”.

That night we dined at another local spot called SNOB, where I tried Carolina gold rice.  Later we stopped for treats on our way back to our hotel.  Milkshakes, fudge, and for me – pumpkin ice cream!  It was my favorite dessert of the trip, to be honest.  We took our spoils back to our room to watch The Notebook.  The hotel we were staying at had Apple TV.  I hope the rest of the world catches on to this trend…

That night Lori got a call from the adoption agency she has been working with for the process of getting her fourth baby.  The birth mom that had picked her and her family had gone into labor early.  It was after midnight when she got the call and the Charleston Airport was already closed.  The sweet little baby boy was born less than an hour later.  Lori caught the first flight home in the wee hours the morning.  We were so sad she had to leave early, but so excited for her!

The next day we took a plantation tour.  We explored Middleton Place [the Patriot was filmed there] and spent the majority of the day on the property.  We had lunch – the homemade cornbread was my favorite, took a carriage ride, toured the house, and explored the gardens.

IMG_2857

When we returned back to the city we all got changed for dinner at Hall’s Chophouse.  It was only six blocks away from our hotel so we decided to walk.  The light drizzle we were in soon turned to pouring rain.  I’ve never been caught in a storm like that before.  It wasn’t so much rain as it was sheets of water coming down.  We were all drenched within minutes!

The next day was unscheduled.  We had a lunch date at Cru Cafe – my favorite lunch of the entire trip.

IMG_2863

I then made all the girls walk over a mile to Sugar Bakeshop for some delicious cupcakes.  The blueberry lemon and almond were my favorite.  I hope they were as pleased as I was to try them.  PS – If you’re wondering why my hair is in a scraggly knot on my head in every single picture and also why we all have a slight sheen to our bodies, it would be due to the high humidity.  I’ve never experienced humid air like in the south before.  I have mad respect for ladies that curl and style their hair each day in Charleston, you are all my idols!

We shopped for a bit together before all going our separate ways.  My favorite buys were some killer deal items purchased at Madewell and a Christmas outfit for baby girl at a shop called Kids on King.  Shopping for myself these days is not as much fun…being egg-shaped and all.

That night we had dinner at HUSK – where we all tried crispy fried chicken skins and deep fried catfish.

The weather decided to turn rainy again so we spent our last night in Charleston at a very unique movie theater.  Cinebar – where you could order brownie sundaes, chocolate cake, milkshakes, and popcorn and have it brought to your theater seat.  Which we did, obviously.  We stayed cool and dry that night and enjoyed the 100 Foot Journey.  It made me ache for Paris already.

It was such a fantastic long weekend.  I can’t describe how much I love being with my mother-in-law and sister-in-laws.  We know how to have a good time, no doubt about it.

As for southern food, I have made my ratings.

Shrimp and Grits: B / southern Cornbread: A+ / Carolina gold rice: A / southern Buscuits: A / Fried Chicken Skin: C+ / Fried Catfish: D

Sadly, we found out the birth mom had decided to parent the baby on her own that Lori and her family had been involved with.  It was devestating news and my heart is broken for Lori and Travis.  Hoping heaven sends another sweet baby [and a willing birth mother] to the Waylands very, very soon.  In the meantime, we are all sending prayers and positive thoughts their way.

I officially turned 31 weeks pregnant while in Charleston and am thanking my lucky stars that I am pregnant in Utah and not in South Carolina.  Dry heat is the way I wanna live, that’s for sure!

Paris / NYC / Babymoon

It’s a long story – but to keep it short, Zach and I were torn when we started planning this so called “babymoon”.  Zach’s going through a quarter-life crisis and thinks that once this baby comes out of me that we will never, ever…ever travel again.  His fears are justified.  We’ve been so lucky to have had the opportunity to travel together over the last [almost] six years.  Trips will be far and few between in the future, and even so, they will be completely different.  So in an attempt to have a one last hurrah, we wanted to make this trip count.  We went back and forth between Hawaii and New York forever.  Totally last minute, we decided on Paris.  Mark and Jeanene joined us in Paris and then would go their separate ways to Switzerland.  We would stay in Paris for a bit longer before flying to New York before returning home.  It was meant to be, I guess, because everything just fell into place rapidly.

Saturday we boarded our direct flight to Paris.  I was a little hesitant to take an international flight being almost 7 and a half months pregnant – but I figured I would go into it with a good attitude and hope for the best.  I was envious of Zach – he took a sleeping pill and was out within 5 minutes of reaching 10,000 feet.

IMG_2363

With a stroke of luck, our row had an international outlet so I could charge my computer the entire flight.  45 minutes into the flight I decided I would try to sleep.  I figured if I woke up, then I woke up.  I had been asleep for about 30 minutes before I awoke to Zach battling with a bag of peanuts.  I opened my eyes to see him smooshing a bag of peanuts very noisily.

I asked him “Zach, do you want me to help you open those?”

He just stared blankly at me.

Then he continued to crinkle the peanut package in my face.  Words cannot express the annoyingness of this sound.  Not only to me, but to our fellow passengers.  I kept telling him, “Babe, that is really loud.  Do you want me to help you get those open?”  But to no avail.  He was dead to the world – doped up on a sleeping pill, making as much noise as possible with what he had.  Like flying with a five-year-old.

Needless to say I never got back to sleep.  Luckily I got a ton of work done and felt super accomplished by the time we landed in Paris.  Zach, on the other hand, has been permanently banned from ingesting a sleeping pill ever again considering he got sick in the last couple of hours in the air.  No need to reminisce about our flight to Africa…there was puke involved, but at least he didn’t puke on himself this time!  So it was a victory!

We took a taxi from CDG to the hotel and after ditching our bags we took a little nap.  As soon as we had all rested a bit we set off to observe the neighborhood our hotel was in.  This was the closest Zach and I had ever stayed to the Eiffel Tour.  It was a fantastic location.

Processed with VSCOcam with m5 preset

We roamed around the area and then had dinner at our local favorite – Pizza Amalfi.  The manager recognizes me every time we dine there.  He was elated to find out we were expecting a little girl and he told me to name her Lisa.  We went back to the Eiffel Tour to see her sparkle and grab our first of many crepes of the trip.

The next morning I woke up to a zonked out Zach.  He wasn’t going anywhere, so I went down to breakfast by myself.  I brought some of it back up to our room in time to watch the sun rise.  The view was amazing…

Our first full day we walked down to the Seine River to take a boat tour.  Mark and Jeanene had never done the tour on the water, so we thought it would be fun.  The weather was perfect.

IMG_2438

We dined at a cafe near our hotel afterwards for a late lunch.  Later we took a taxi to the Montmartre for dinner.  We ate at a steak and seafood restaurant that didn’t mess around.  Mark and Zach shared a giant slab of beef on a hot rock.

IMG_2433

Jeanene and I got an incredibly moist fish baked in packed salt.  The meal was awesome.

IMG_2432

We walked up to the Sacré-Coeur and for the first time walked through it.  We walked down the steps before taking a taxi back to the Eiffel Tour for another crepe.

IMG_2532

Our second full day we took the RER to Versailles.  We stopped just outside for a McDonald’s visit – mostly for decent bathrooms and sodas with ice.  Once we arrived at the palace we were all stoked there wasn’t a wait.  We went straight to lunch at one of the palace’s cafeterias.  After our baguette sandwiches we went outside to the gardens.

We grabbed ourselves a golf cart (seriously, so worth every euro) and cruised around the entire place.

Mark’s favorite was Apollo’s water feature.  This is also where we parked our golf cart and some Russian chick stole our directions off our golf cart.  Luckily Jeanene and Zach were brave enough to call her out and get them back.

Our favorite was the Petit Trianon.  I haven’t seen the gardens in bloom since my visit with Zach on our Study Abroad trip.  I couldn’t believe how beautiful it all was.

We obviously had to pay a visit to the farm – where Zach heckled the goats.

Mark lead us on a search for the Grotto – Marie Antionette’s swimming hole.  Zach was thoroughly enthused…

On our way out of the Petit we had some freshly squeezed juice made from the oranges from the orangerie.  Mark loved it so much he made us do a drive-thru on the golf cart at the Grand Trianon – our next stop.

We ate dinner at a random restaurant before crashing for bed.

The next day the men set off on a biking adventure while Jeanene and I set off on our mission:  to find a blessing dress for my baby girl.  On a previous trip to Paris, Jeanene and my sister-in-law Gina found some blessing outfits for some of my nieces and nephews.  She convinced me we could find something, and I was grateful for her patience.  We tried several boutique stores, but had no luck.  Since there are very few Parisians who know what a baby blessing is, we kept asking for anywhere we could find a “christening dress”.  Turns out people go all out on Christenings in Paris.  Hand made gowns made from antique lace were available, but unfortunately they needed a real baby to create one – completely custom.  So we kept on searching.  Meanwhile, the guys were riding their bikes through the Garden of the Tulleries, which is apparently not allowed.  They were chased down by some French version of a mall cop.

We retired before it was time to head to our dinner reservation at Little Italy.  It was my favorite meal of the trip.  Something about the pesto pasta at the place, I am telling you.  We walked around the neighborhood afterwards to look at the flower shops and saw the Pompidou all lit up at night.

The next day we had some time to kill before our night at the Louvre, so I made everyone stop at Ladureé for a pre-lunch snack.  Since we were already on the Champ-Élyssé we did a little more baby shopping.

We had lunch at the Paris London Cafe – Mark’s favorite place in all of Paris (mostly because they give you tons of ice with your Coke Zero) and all of us dubbed it was the best lunch of the trip.  Afterwards we walked through the Paris Opera House.  It was Zach’s first time walking through – it was just as beautiful and ornate as one would imagine.

On our way out of the Opera House we spotted a gigantic mall.  Jeanene and I did a little bit of shopping and the guys requested a stop at the indoor McDonald’s.

We then made our way over to the Louvre.  Wednesday is one of the nights the museum is open late and we wanted Mark and Jeanene to experience it at night – just like Zach and I’s first date.

We took our obligatory photo – the one we have taken on our first date, 1st year anniversary, 4th year anniversary, and now…our last trip as a family of two.

The next morning we went our separate ways.  M & J left for the airport to catch a flight to Switzerland and I drug Zach out of bed at 5:30 AM to get maternity pictures.  I didn’t know it was happening until 2 days before that actual morning.  Since we were originally planning to go to New York for our babymoon, I had contacted a photographer to take some maternity pictures.  When our plans changed and we decided to head to Paris, I contacted everyone I could find (that spoke English) to take some maternity photos for us.  It was very last minute and I didn’t have very good luck.  It wasn’t until 48 hours before that I knew for sure we were going to do them.  A sweet English-speaking photographer local in Paris (with four kids of her own) agreed to take our photos for us for a killer price.  I still can’t believe how much she charged us, especially because the Euro is less than the dollar right now.  I told her our first date was the Louvre and she agreed to meet us there and take us around a few other nearby spots.  Her only stipulation was that we meet her at 7:00 AM so that she could take all the shots before all the tourists emerged.  It was kind of a wild card, but I am excited to see how they turn out!

After our photos I made Zach go back to Ladureé – this time for a BOX of macarons in our favorite flavors:  vanilla, chocolate, salted caramel, strawberry, raspberry, and lemon.

When then made our way back to the Les Halles area to have lunch at a little Italian place Zach found online.  It was the best margherita pizza I have ever had – and I’ve had a lot of margherita pizza, sadly.  Funny thing about Paris:  all their margherita pizzas come with black olives.  It’s so weird, but I can’t hate on a great thing…

We walked around the neighborhood, walking through the Pompidou for a bit, and then went back to our hotel to change into something a little warmer for the evening.

We had dinner at the same place we eat every single time we come to Paris.  Zach loves their French onion soup.  It was a delicious meal and we spent some time afterwards walking around a few stores nearby.  Zach enjoyed staring at all the fancy sports cars in the ritzy area nearby where all the designer shopping boutiques are.

It was our last night in Paris.  We couldn’t resist getting one last crepe [Zach got cinnamon and sugar every time and I got Nutella and banana] and walking back to our hotel.

The next morning we went straight to the airport for our flight to New York.  We arrived in NYC late in the afternoon and went straight to dinner at Dos Caminos in SOHO a couple of blocks away from our hotel.

The next morning we did some shopping in SOHO.  After walking up and down Broadway for a bit we made our way over to Shake Shack – my one request of the entire trip.  Not only is it the only time I eat a cheeseburger, but their beloved crinkle fries are back.  It was like heaven was shining right down on me…

We spent the rest of our afternoon roaming around – popping in and out of shops, relishing in any air conditioning possible, and then heading to dinner at Lombardi’s Pizza near Little Italy.  We both were starved after all the walking in the crazy humidity.

Zach asked for Pinkberry afterwards and I couldn’t resist – besides, they had peanut butter flavor!

The next day we packed up all our bags and checked out of our hotel before taking the subway to Yankee Stadium.  I’ve said it before and I know I will say it again, but my husband has incredible timing.  We always seem to be in random locations where specific sporting events are taking place.  Last time it was conveniently the Bruin’s ice hockey playoff game while we were in Boston.  This time, Derek Jeter’s retirement game was scheduled for our last day in New York.  I was happy to attend at Zach’s request.  My only request was that our seats were in the shade.  It had been hot and humid all weekend, but Sunday was slightly overcast and 10 degrees cooler.

The event was such a blast.  All these special guests had shown up to celebrate Jeter – including Michael Jordan and Cal Ripken, Jr.

They also had clips between innings of other celebrities that had filmed their messages of congrats for Derek.  It was so fun to experience and I am so glad we went.

29 weeks

29 weeks in Paris was an absolute dream.  Baby girl feels like she has doubled in size over the last seven days.  I don’t know if she had a growth spurt or if it was all the baguettes/crepes I consumed.

I’m so grateful to Mark, Jeanene, and Zach for letting a pregnant chick tag along with them on this amazing trip.  Paris pregnant went a lot better than I expected.  Even New York, with the wild humid temps, was really wonderful.  Thank you to everyone who made this trip possible for us, we feel very lucky.
