Food Feud

Yes, this post is mostly about food.  Food and what happened this week.

First, if it weren’t for my sweet friend Lindsey, I would have never known that there was a new copy-cat Swig so close to home.  Their sugar cookies are A MAZ ING.

And because there wasn’t enough going against me with the FIIZ, Easter showed up at all the local grocery stores.  Could it be any more obvious?  Reeses Eggs are the devil.

Since I was busy eating sugar cookies and Reeses Eggs all week, I had to combat it somehow.  So I ran multiple times outside this week because the weather was so nice.  I got all geared up and went outside looking like a human traffic cone.  I was running by our little neighborhood park and I heard a little boy ask his mom, “Mom, is that a space man?”  As soon as Zach got home form work I told him all about it.  He agreed with the little boy that I did look pretty ‘futuristic’ but I didn’t care what either of them thought.  My new Nike jacket purchase was worth it.  I am definitely not going to get hit by any automobiles.

I also went to lunch at From Scratch…AGAIN.  My friends came along with me and have all been converted.  Their pizzas are to DIE for.

Thursday I took a little road trip down south to hang out with these darling girls [and their mommas].  We met Mary’s daughter Keila for the first time and she is just the sweetest thing.  Not to mention all that gorgeous dark hair!

We ate lunch and chatted for a few hours.  It was so fun to catch up with all of them!

Along with sunny days and Easter candy…comes wedding season.  I am in the midst of 6 weddings currently, and although I am a crazy person, I really LOVE to create wedding invitations.  I’m working on my first hand painted wedding invitation.  The invitation and the menus went pretty well, but the escort cards were a little more…involved.  Not pictured below are lots, lots, more of them.

Friday Zach and I had a very romantic double date.  With the two of us and House of Cards.  After a meal out for pasta we enjoyed Season 2 from the comfort of our own room.

Saturday we went for sushi and a movie.  We shopped around the Gateway for a bit, including an impromptu visit in a new soda and candy shop.  They had every kind of candy imaginable…and unicorn heads.

We went to see 3 Days to Kill – with Kevin Costner.  We walked out 3/4 of the way through.  I adore Kevin (not sure if Zach does, but he made me watch that baseball movie he was in like 50 times because Classic’s helicopter is in it) but this was not his finest film.

Nothing really special happened Sunday, but I did break out my most recent clearance find:

8 dolla necklace.  Pays to dig through the rejects some time.

8 dollar necklaces and NASCAR.  That was the finale of our weekend!

Henderson Halloween

I’ll be honest – Halloween was not my favorite day this week.

Zach was finally coming home from Florida late afternoon Wed, and that was the only thing that was keeping me going through my work day.  Because work sucked.  It sucked so hardcore.  When 5:00 pm hit I finished up some pending tasks and then left the office.  Not even 15 minutes later, stopped [waiting my turn] at a stop sign – I got rear-ended.  I’m telling you, it was not my day.  Turns out this beautiful girl, who ran right into the back of my sweet Mazdarati, had been in another accident earlier this week.  I felt for her, seriously.  I have had my fair share of accidents in my short 9 years of driving history.  I was surprisingly calm, which shocked me because of the horrid day I had just experienced.

Then I arrived home.  I got to see my sweet husband – who assessed the damage immediately after giving me a big hug/kiss.  It instantly made my whole day better just to be with him.  I didn’t feel like going out anymore.  We had plans, but I begged Zach to cancel them and he obliged – so we ordered food, got in our sweats, and handed out candy to the darling trick-or-treaters while watching the Jazz game.

We barely had a handful of kiddies last year, and we weren’t prepared for this year’s turn-out.  We ran out of sugar sweets and started giving out snack packs of chips/Cheetos from our pantry.  Turns out pre-teens LOVE Cheetos, so that was a plus.

My favorite costume of the night?  Garret, our neighbor, in his T-Rex costume that he made himself out of cardboard and craft paint.  It was humongous and it had an ingenious design.  You stuck the candy in it’s mouth and it “swallowed” it into a pillow case of a stomach.  This kid is an artistic genius!

We didn’t dress up.  We didn’t attend any parties.  We didn’t even execute the elaborate spooky prank we had planned.  But after being apart from him for almost a week and a half (except a few days in between) – I was grateful to have him home.  So we were together, for the weirdest Halloween I can recall in my entire life and that was it.

Also, something that made me smile…only 15 more days until we leave for our anniversary trip.  I’ve never been more excited and grateful to see the month of November turn up!  Yes, we do lame count-downs on our kitchen chalkboard…

Gone Hunting

I have a love/hate relationship with October.  My second favorite holiday – my least favorite season (hunting season, of course).  But here is how the week went down:

Monday we had Family Night with Zach’s parents.  We went to dinner [Kobe] and a movie – we saw Argo.  It was fantastic!

Wednesday night we decided to take a journey to Scheels – we made a date of it, fast food and all.  It was our first time and I wanted to see what all the hype was about.

I must say, it lived up to all the chatter.  We looked at snowboarding gear, Ute wear, and spent a good 30 minutes in the North Face section.  We also explored the hunting gear to make sure Zach had all he needed for his big hunting trip.

Thursday was my last Relief Society activity – definitely bittersweet.  We had a Ghoul’s Night Out/Craft Session.  We had a decent turn-out, considering it was UEA weekend…and there were pumpkin cookies by the lovely Lindsey.

Friday Zach left to join the men in his family on their annual elk hunting trip in Montana.  I imagine they are eating like kings [Jeanene went along to cook for them], hunting all day, and watching sports all night.  The only images I have received from Zach are pictures of his guns in the grass.  So I don’t know how much “hunting” is really going on.  I do know for sure they have one elk, so no matter what – they come home winners, right?!

Saturday morning I took a drive up Emigration Canyon to meet some of my USU friends for breakfast at Ruth’s Diner.  The leaves are still around – it was gorgeous.

It was the perfect fall morning – the weather was great, the leaves were falling around us, live music playing…and fantastic company.

Later that night was the Fotheringham family Halloween Party.  There was a soup bar, candy, games, and a costume contest.

My cousin Trina [Army Chic], Mom [Biker Chic], and myself [nothing…but had a spider headband to borrow].  It was great to see everyone and their littles dressed in their adorable costumes.

The night ended really late with a Coldstone run and a sleep-over at my madre’s house.  My Dad is out of town as well – he has been in Wisconsin for 4 weeks, going on 5!  My mom is one tough lady, I couldn’t fathom going without Zach for more than a week.  Luckily Dad comes home this week and we are celebrating – the only way Fotheringhams know how – by going out to eat.

Sunday everyone came over to my parents’ house for our annual Halloween cookie decorating party.  We started with 10 people years ago, and as each year passes we add more families in the mix.  34 people joined us this year.  There literally wasn’t enough room inside the kitchen and dining room so we had to move the party outside into the garage.  Luckily, because my Dad designs and restores restaurants, he had three old restaurant booths in the garage.  The only time having three old, grubby booths in your garage will ever serve a good purpose.  This is about half of us…

I basically get assigned to mix the frosting colors every year – that is my task considering I can’t bake decent sugar cookies…

My cousin Ryanne has a boyfriend named Zac – we were both missing our Zac[h]s that night!

Our friend Ashley brought her newborn baby girl [SIX DAYS OLD] and my Grandmother would not let her go.

The night ended with a stomach ache from too much frosting [ironically I had to go to bed early to make it to my 7:00 am dentist appointment in the morning – not a good pre party to a dentist appointment, obviously] and watching the new episode of Downton Abbey in my bed.  Thank you Melinda!!

As for now – counting down the hours until I see Zach.

Wedding Weekend [#22] [#15]

What is more exciting that one of your best friend’s weddings?  We’ve been anticipating this week/weekend since Kristina got engaged to Jesse.  It was so amazing to be apart of such a monumental event in their lives.  But there were a few things that happened before the big day…including checking off two items on our summer list.  In fact, I may be putting the cart before the horse, here…but we might need to add items to our list.  We are already making some serious progress and it is only the end of June.  Only time will tell…

Tuesday we decided to try out #22 – Have a tennis match.  There are a couple of courts up the street from our house and after Zach’s hockey practice we stopped by for an outdoor evening activity.  I had actually never played a real game of tennis before.  Sure, I’ve messed around with a racket, but never actually had a serious match.  Let me preface by saying that Zach is an excellent tennis player.  He took lessons when he was younger, so…he’s pretty legit.  He was a really patient and informative teacher.  I must say, I LOVED IT.  How have I missed out all of these years?  Tennis is my new favorite sport!

Speaking of new…I tried a new restaurant this week as well!  Actually, it wasn’t a restaurant, it was a market.  My co-worker, Josh, took me to the Japanese Market on Main Street for lunch.  I was not too excited when we pulled into the parking lot.  To be honest, I was completely sketched out and wanted to go back to Subway.  He convinced to me just walk in a take a look, and to be honest that didn’t help the cause.  Japanese markets have a funk to them that can’t be described and this one was extra funky.  But once I looked around, selected my sushi, and saw that they had homemade Ramen noodles…I was sold!  I guess you can’t judge a market by it’s outdoor sign.

The rest of the week was pretty much a blur.  Preparing and packing for the wedding took the majority of my nights after work.  Making table number cards, making place cards for each guest, finding my wedding shoes, having my dress altered and fitted…you get the idea.

Friday was the first event of the wedding weekend.  Kristina invited all of her bridesmaids to afternoon tea at the Grand America.  It was so beautiful…even the food was beautiful.  I might add that my Diet Coke was delicious.

The scones and clotted cream brought back memories of London.  It felt like London…except my Diet Coke had ice in it.  That’s a perfect London I would say.

Kristina gave us each a thoughtful and beautiful gift for being a part of her bridal party.  We are lucky to be her friends.

Keeping with the ‘wedding weekend’ theme, after our tea party I had to meet up with my brother and Zach for my cousin Shelby’s wedding in Bountiful.  It was great to see family and spend time with them!

After the reception Zach, Blake, and myself decided to go out to eat.  Zach and I had never been to Brio down at Fashion Place, so Blake drove us down there to try it out!

The boys talked business, as usual, the whole night…while I sat over on my corner of the table chowing on my bow tie pasta.  I was happy as a clam.  The food was amazing!  We stayed late, and then we all came over to our place for some TV time and chatting.

The next morning was spent running errands and packing our bags for the wedding.  We also tried a new snack, a twist on the chocolate covered strawberry.  Hulled strawberries filled with dark chocolate.  Much easier to eat than a chocolate covered strawberry.

Then we were off to Park City for Kristina’s big weekend!  We started out at the rehearsal for the ceremony at the St. Regis.  After practicing walking down the aisle with our escorts, we met up with our husbands/significant others for the rehearsal dinner at Reyes Adobe on Main Street.  The food was delicious and we had a great time roasting and toasting to our friends.

After the dinner, my friends’ husbands drove back to Salt Lake – Zach and I decided to get a hotel for the night so he stayed with me.  When their husbands left, they took their cars with them, so my friends had no mode of transportation for the rest of the night.  That meant that Zach was left to drive all five of us girls around all night.  This included a late night run for ice cream and tampons.  Like I’ve said a thousand times, he gets the Husband of the Year Award.  After a few hours of girl talk [Zach was also there] we retired to our own hotel.  We ended the night with a soak in the hot tub and a movie on our laptop.

The next day, to reward Zach for taking care of my friends and myself, I broke one of my ‘rules’ as a wife.  #15 – Breakfast in bed.  I am a mean wife and won’t let my husband eat in our bed.  But considering we were at a hotel, I made an exception.  I made him eggs on toast, one of his favorite breakfasts of all time.  He was in heaven.

After our breakfast, Zach dropped me off at the St. Regis with the rest of the girls to get ready in the Bridal Suite.  Have you ever seen 9 girls in one room getting ready for a wedding?  With only 4 mirrors?  It’s a hot, sticky mess.  Hot because of all the flat irons and curling irons.  Sticky because of all the freaking hairspray.

And lots of lipstick application.  Maybe 8-10 liptstick re-applications.

And waterfall braids.  Thanks to my girl Brittany S.  for the braid hook-up!  [There were two Britts in her Bridal Party].

Lots of hair teasing.

And my favorite moment of the entire wedding might be when my escort called Alison “the Albino”.  Yes, that happened.

All five of us [minus the bride] friends since the 7th Grade.  Even though so much has changed…everything still feels the exact same.

Alison’s skillz really paid off, being a stylist in New York and all, helping Kristina get ready.  We even had to pull off a wedding miracle with a little wedding dress mishap…but no biggie.  What are bridesmaids for, right?  Whitney A. [there were two Whits in her Bridal Party] did a really great job putting on Kristina’s shoes too…because she is a mom and all, you know, haha!

Then it was time for the ceremony.  It was beautiful.  It had been overcast all day long, and when they started to recite their vows to each other the sun peaked through the clouds.  Jesse [the groom] and his family are Jewish, so they were married under the hoopa and smashed the glass and everything!  I have a special place in my heart for Jewish traditions because of my Mom’s family that practices Judaism.  It was fun to hear the Rabbi bless the bread and sing his songs.  It was a really special ceremony full of tradition.

The dinner afterwards was so amazing.  I imagine nothing at the St. Regis isn’t amazing, though.  I helped Kristina do her place cards for all the guests.  Yes, I had to put a little cow, fish, and veggie on each card, people.  It took forever…but anything for my friend!

It kind of made me teary to see her card, “Mrs. Kristina Lapin.”  Tender.

We ate, danced…Zach even dance battled some random guy.  It got pretty crazy.

I am so happy for Kristina and Jesse.  I love my friend, and now she has married her best friend.  We love the Lapins!!!

Halloween Hype

Halloween is my second favorite holiday, following closely behind Christmas.  Even though it is still September, I am so anxious to put up my Halloween decorations.  I have promised myself to wait until October 1st, but it is hard because I have very little fall decor.  Say hello to our newest Halloween Decoration….thanks to inspiration on Pinterest!

Zach + Katie in spooky silhouette form!  Now I need to find a REAL frame to put them in…
