Sweet 16

Monday night for FHE Zach and I went out to dinner with his parents before his hockey game.  I love when Zach’s parents come along to his games! It’s so nice to have their company.  And Zach played great – their team won with a lead of 5 goals!

For Father’s Day this year Zach told me he wanted some new grilling accessories.  So we purchased that part of his gift together [to ensure I got what he wanted] and it wasn’t even a week before he conned me into letting him use them for dinner.  I am the worst at keeping gifts a surprise and constantly give birthday and Christmas gifts notoriously days earlier than I should.  But he lured me in with his plans to cook salmon and halibut with some fresh veggies…

I must admit he is becoming quite the grill master.  A Father’s Day gift much deserved…

I am the kind of obnoxious person that has excessive decorations for every holiday…with the exception of the 4th of July.  This is disappointing considering I grew up being raised by a very patriotic father.  (Literally, in his professional work resume it says that he loves God and his country.  That part gets its own line.  He is pretty serious about it.)  So I decided to make some Independence Day prints for my house.

LAND THAT I LOVE PRINT

I am working on two more.  Hopefully I can finish them before July comes.

As of the nursery nonsense, her crib was the last piece of furniture that I had to order.  I have been putting it off because I knew I would have to save up [and do some convincing] in order to purchase the one I have wanted from Room & Board – my favorite overpriced furniture store.  A neighbor told me that she got her crib from Walmart and this week I decided to check out their selection.  I found an almost identical crib for a fifth of the price of my R&B crib.  I saved over $800 and got free shipping!  I was pretty stoked.

I also ordered her a lamp [aka marquee light] to hang above her dresser.  I can’t decide if I want to paint it a bright and crazy color, but like I stated before, I have plenty of time left to do that, I guess.

I also made her a mobile to hang above her crib.  It took me longer than I had planned, but I love the way it turned out!  The brass geometric shapes will go well with all the other crazy stuff I have planned.

Zach and I also did a lot of work in the back yard these past two weeks.  The front yard has been kind of neglected, but that back yard is doing pretty good.  We have plans for a lot of late night s’mores on the fire pit…

Early Friday morning we went out for my sister-in-law Lori’s birthday.  We ate breakfast at Eggs in the City [I seriously just get the Mama Burrito every time, it’s amazing!] and then ventured across the street to Jolley’s to do a little unnecessary shopping.  They have darling gifts and oodles of baby stuff.

Screen Shot 2014-06-09 at 8.30.57 AM

Later my mother-in-law and sister-in-law Gina took me maternity shopping for my very first time.  Luckily I can still fit into all my pants, but it never hurts to be prepared.  Besides, they showed me all the best stuff to get, which I was extremely grateful for.  I also got to put that round little pillow under my shirt while trying stuff on – which made it feel even more real.

Friday night Zach and I went to the Fault in Our Stars movie with my friend Angie.  Angie is the one who convinced me to read the book last year and we both have been anticipating the movie for months.  That’s the reason we went on opening night.

the fault in our

There were pros and cons to going the very first night, however.  I never realized how popular this book was to the teenage population.  But I soon realized it when the demographic in the movie theater was pretty much all female and under the age of 18.  One very emotional teen [sitting in front of us] even brought a whole box of tissues (pictured below) and offered them to Angie and I.  Her clan was by far the most audible in the theater.  Angie and I were content with our Mike & Ike’s and Red Vines.  Thanks for the treats, Ang!

Saturday we went boating for the first time this season with my parents, brother, and future sister-in-law.  This is by far my favorite part of summer.  I was thrilled to be out in the sun and to enjoy everyone’s company.

boating 2

Some of us, however, enjoyed the sun more than others.  About two hours into the day, Zach put on his burqa.  This consisted of two towels and my swim cover-up.

Even for skiing the scum at Utah Lake, it was a beautiful day and the water was actually pretty pleasant.  Not warm, but pleasant.

This weekend also meant my last few days at 16 weeks.  I am officially over 4 months!  Not quite half way there, but still feeling really good.  I have thoroughly enjoyed being pregnant thus far and am appreciating this pleasant time while I can.  Because summer is only going to get hotter and I am only going to get larger…

Spouseless

This week:

The Proactiv project that I have been working on for months now finally got installed.  The newly designed kiosk was completed and all finished up so if you are ever in West Edmonton, Canada…go check it out?

IMG_3333

I created some “Great Gatsby” themed birthday invitations for the cutest one-year-old I’ve ever seen.  Her sweet mom sent me this picture of how they turned out.  I can’t wait to see more pictures from the party!

IMG_3349

All of our outdoor furniture has arrived for our back yard.  Literally it all came within two days.  Since the back yard is not yet completed, it lives in our garage until we can set it up.  I am itching to get our little fire pit set up to roast some mallows.  It’s only a matter of time now…

IMG_3371

Saturday morning Zach left for Lake Powell with his family.  I couldn’t get the week off from work, so he went solo with his parents.  Since we weren’t to see each other for almost nine days, we went out for a date on Friday.  We dined at the Copper Onion – yes, that is a fried egg on top of Zach’s pork chop…

IMG_3350

…and saw the Way Way Back at the Broadway Theater for its opening night.  You’ve never seen a happier Zach than when he receives a free T-Shirt.  It was his favorite moment of the night.  Also, the movie was excellent.

IMG_3369

Speaking of T-shirts…

Zach and I have a serious problem when it comes to tees.  We are tee hoarders.  We have two dressers in our shared walk-in closet and 90 percent of that storage goes to tees.  Pajama tees, casual tees, v-necks…you get the idea.  Since Zach left Saturday morning I made myself a goal to clean out and organize our closet while he was gone.  So that’s exactly what I did.  I got rid of 62 T-shirts.  I am not lying…I counted.  I kept sentimental ones:  our NY Yankee tees from our first Yankees game together, our Cubs tees from our first visit to Wrigley Field, and so on.  I also organized all our bins, the two dressers in our master bedroom, and de-cluttered my jewelry boxes.

IMG_3368

The rest of Saturday was spent at the Nordstrom Sale, a tradition since I was six, with some friends.  We dined at Brio and then ventured through Nordstrom and a few other stores at Fashion Place.

IMG_3373

I’m so grateful to have friends that share my love for sales:  Jenn and Lindsey, you are the best!

Sunday I attended church at my old home ward with my parents and then got to celebrate my Grandpa’s 82nd birthday over dinner and a lemon bundt cake.  No, he’s not sleeping…he’s making a wish!  I adore him.

IMG_3366

Even though I have almost seven more days of being spouseless, I have big plans for this week / weekend.  This sorta single girl is on the move…

Quality over Quantity

This week, Zach and I spent a lots of quality time together and with our families.

Monday my mom and I drove down to Lehi after work to help her friend.  She’s moving into a darling new home and she wanted to see what furniture would fit in her new place!  We measured all her existing furniture, had dinner at Kneaders, and then went over to her new place to see what would go where.  This place is perfect for her…and the house number is her birthday [5/18] – it was meant to be!

Addiction is a funny thing.  You know how people that quit smoking usually have a “fix”?  Like my co-worker quit smoking years ago but now chews bubble gum excessively.  And a college friend of mine quit smoking his freshmen year and quickly became fixated on Dum Dums.  He went through bags and bags of them.  When I quit Diet Coke I found my fix within 24 hours.  Trader Joe’s milk chocolate covered peanut butter pretzel bites.  They are I N C R E D I B L E.  One addiction for another, I guess.  I think not sipping on something sweet all day makes me crave sweet things…all day.

Since I finished our custom New York subway map, I decided to tackle a Paris metro map as well.  This one is a little more near and dear to our hearts.  I have decided I have accomplished my map collection with just the NY and Paris maps.  I’m done mapping for now.

Tuesday was a fantastic work day for me.  I completed all the new Cobra Puma Golf fixtures for their 2014 roll-out.  I also [ironic timing] received a lovely package in the mail from the guys at CPG.  They sent a giant neon and pinstripe staff bag.  Everyone was dying laughing at me carrying it around the office.

photo 2

Tuesday after work my aunt texted me that my cousin Tyson had a lacrosse game at the park just across the street from our house.  I was on my way home from work with our dinner – Zach suggested Chinese take-out would be perfect for a rainy evening and I obliged.

photo 4

We gobbled down our food, read each other our fortunes, and then rushed over to the park to root for Tyson.  Turns out the game was postponed due to the weather – but it was great to catch up with my aunt and uncle for a bit!

photo 3

I spent Tuesday evening at another adult hip-hop class in Sandy – always a great time!

Wednesday night we met up with Zach’s family to celebrate an early Mothers’ Day.  We dined at Longhorn Steakhouse [Zach and I’s first time].  Mark chose the restaurant, obviously.  It was great to celebrate Jeanene and all the other mothers!  My sweet mother-in-law always includes me in the celebration even though I am not yet a mother.

On the way home from O-Town Zach’s car got a flat tire.  Believe it or not [considering my driving record] this was my first experience with a flat tire.  I remember my dad went through a brief period where he either thought I was never going to get married or something awful was going to happen to my spouse…so he taught me all the basics.  How to patch walls, find a stud, hang a picture, check my oil, change a tire…and so forth.  So when it finally happened, Zach and I were a pretty good team!  We did have to Google how to release the spare tire of our make and model, but that was the worst of it.  I basically held the flashlight the whole time, let’s be honest…

photo-9

We didn’t get home until 11:30 pm and Zach had a roller hockey game.  He rushed off to make it down to WVC and I rewarded myself for all my hard work with an ice cream sandwich and a hot bath.  You forget how amazing ice cream sandwiches taste after going without one all winter.

Have you tried this pizza from Papa Murphy’s?  The thin crust Chicken Bacon Artichoke?  We paired this pizza with the NBA Playoffs this weekend up at Zach’s cabin.  It’s our new favorite.

IMG_1632

Saturday night we went out for a date.  Dinner at Market Street [Early Bird Special before 7:00 pm: because we are ancient now] and a movie at the Gateway.

IMG_1668

We did make a brief stop at Brookstone to get Zach a new nose hair trimmer.  I told you we were old.  That meant I got to sit in the massage chair – I was quite fond of the calf massager.  You see, it’s only acceptable to sit in the massage chairs if you are actually going to purchase something.  Right?

IMG_1681

We spent the rest of our night in Gatsby.  Such a beautiful film.  If you’ve read the book [it had been years since I had read it] you would remember the story line.  Not the most climactic story; but the filming, the sets, and the special effects were to die for.  My co-worker actually built a model and someone from the special effects team on Gatsby purchased it to be in some of the computer generated scenes of the film.  It was pretty exciting!

IMG_1683

Sunday after church [Mother’s Day], and before we went to my parents’ house for Sunday dinner, Zach and I spent a little quality time together ‘blasting fools’ in COD.  Just another feel-good activity in honor of Mother’s Day I guess.  It was his idea, obviously…quality time, remember?

IMG_1700

We dined at the Fotheringham household later that afternoon.  My Grandma and Grandpa even joined us.  I had to get a picture of all three of us together in honor of the holiday, ya know…

IMG_1705

After we grubbed we spent the rest of the evening outside in the back yard.

IMG_1714

I believe all the excitement started when my husband challenged me to jump over a plastic lawn chair.  He cleared it with ease.  Mine was not so glamorous considering I was wearing a skirt…

IMG_1715

Then the chair was out – and in its place:  the recycle bin.

IMG_1717

I don’t know how it evolved, but not long after the garbage can was a back-yard obstacle course.  Mostly conjured up by the seven-year-old Camron.  The tasks were:  1.  Do a cartwheel  2.  Jump over all the random stuff placed in the yard [he mostly collected items from the side of the house and garage]  3.  Walk across a sketchy wood pallet  4.  Leap over the tipped lawn chair  5.  Climb the monkey bars  6.  Slide down the slide  7.  Jump on the tramp

In honor of Mother’s Day – my mom and I did the obstacle course together, holding hands.  A team building exercise, if you will…

IMG_1722

Yes, my one stunning leap over the lawn chair – arms extended and all.  I realize it wasn’t very lady-like to do this in a skirt, but I couldn’t just sit by and watch everyone else have fun…

IMG_1723

IMG_1732

Showing her true motherly instincts – there to catch me if I fell off the top of the monkey bars…and trying not to let my skirt flap open.  That happened anyway.  What can ya do?

IMG_1725

In typical family fashion, we managed to turn a regular night into something…different.

My family wouldn’t be the same without my mom.  She’s been the best mother to Blake and I – and I can’t wait to see her as a grandmother one day.  And a special thanks to my mother-in-law for raising my best friend.  Happy Mother’s Day to all the wonderful moms in my life!  I hope your day was special [not as in “special” like ours, like really special…in the normal way.]

Happy Mother’s Day!

She’s a Super Freak

Katie the freak show.  Yup, that’s me.  I wish I could say this week was normal, but alas…I have to be all weird and freakish.  First, our favorite FHE of 2013!

Monday night we had a combined Family Night with our friends / neighbors – the Reeds and Martineaus.  Nash, the Martineau’s little boy, has an obsession with helicopters and asked if they could stop by Classic’s hangar to see one.  We decided to make a night of it!

The boys got a big kick out of it and we even scored with having two mechanics working late so they could turn on the lights…because helicopters are much cooler with the gizmos and gadgets on, ya know.  These boys honestly melt my heart:

IMG_1327 IMG_1328 IMG_1329 IMG_1330 IMG_1331

It was so much fun – Zach and I enjoyed it as much as Nash and Crew did!  We love our neighbors, and loved spending FHE with them!

So…to explain myself a little…towards the end of last week I wasn’t feeling so hot.  I swear I have been sick more the past few months than I ever have been in my entire life.  I don’t do sick well:  I am one of those girls that refuses to take medicine – because I would rather “my body fight it off on its own”.  Because I am stupid like that.  Strange symptoms gradually starting popping up here and there and then hit me pretty heavy Monday and Tuesday of this week.  Tuesday on my lunch break I got so nauseated in Target that I had to sit down in the middle of a random aisle because the packages of Ziplock bags were swirling around me.  So embarrassing.  [To fast forward – things started to get worse as the week went on and I wasn’t feeling any better.]  I know what you are thinking – no I am not pregnant, but you better believe that I thought I was!  But that came back a negative, so I resorted to exploiting my resident brother-in-law to help my cause.  Turns out I had a bad reaction to a vaccination that I received last week – which explained the nausea, stomach aches, splitting headaches, dizziness…and a spooky rash.  Zach got the same vaccination, which is why I ruled this out at the beginning because he didn’t have a single symptom.  Those Hendersons.  They have bionic powers or something.  But me?  Looks like I won’t ever be getting another Tdap for the rest of my life and I’m totally OK with that.  Please bless I never get tetanus.  I tried to go on with my week as I would have normally – I even went to the gym three times and two out of those three times I had to sit my buns down on that gross squishy floor to let the dizziness pass.  But thanks to a lovely perscription [having an MD in the family is one of the most amazing blessings in the world] I am starting to feel better.  Thank you Dr. Henderson!!

In other news:  this week Zach and I spent some time looking at lots in North Salt Lake / Bountiful.  No, we’re not planning on purchasing one…we just like to dream about one day purchasing one.  We went from available lot to available lot – inspecting each one.  Zach is bound and determined to build our future skater children a skate park in our “future back yard”.  He would put one in our current back yard if there was ‘adequate room’.  We’ll see how that pans out…in the future.

IMG_1341

This week in the mail I received an invitation I did for a cute girl I went to high school with.  She individually wrapped them in doilies and wrapped them with string – such a task!  Wedding invitations are so fun to receive in the mail when you become intimately acquainted with them through your computer.  She is having a vintage wedding, which explains the vintage paper look for her invites…

Speaking of design projects:  I finally finished our custom NYC subway map.  Last year I saw a blog where a woman had created a custom map for her 3-year-old son with all his favorite subway stops on it.  She framed it in his room.  I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it.  I decided it would be a fun way to record all our travel memories!  So I decided to tackle New York first.  I had plans to do Paris, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, and London…but after the time spent on this New York map I know I will have to limit my list.  The Met took me F O R E V E R.  But we’re both excited to see it done and can’t wait to hang it in our bedroom.  Another addition to our map collection…

IMG_1342

The weekend treated us well.  Friday we had a dinner and a movie date.  Dinner at the Cheesecake Factory at City Creek and a movie up in our neck of the woods.

IMG_1379

I also made Zach stop at the Grand America while we were down town so I could grab a some macarons.  I have been craving them since we went to Paris in November and these are the best I have found in SLC.  Les Madeleines in Salt Lake has pretty good ones as well, but doesn’t have the selection that the Grand has.  The salted caramel are to die for [if you like macarons].  But beware…they are a little pricy.  Hence the reason only two were purchased.

IMG_1365 IMG_1363

Saturday we had a brunch date at the Park Cafe.  The whole city was buzzing.  Down town was packed and the Liberty Park was exploding with people!  It was so nice to sit outside in the amazing weather.  Zach never strays away from ordering French toast.

IMG_1378

That night we had a double date with our friends the Treasures.  We dined at Ginza for sushi [first timers] and then returned to our house after for what we do best:  talking.  Talking forever.  Sometimes Angie and I talk so long that our husbands fall asleep.  Literally.  But before there was any sleeping we had some pie – to celebrate Jordan’s graduation on Friday from Weber State!  This Wildcat is going to be attending PA school soon, and we’re so happy for him!  They just can’t move too far away…

IMG_1377

We love Gordo and Angie – always a good time with these two!

Sunday we made the trek up to Layton to attend baby Clark’s big day!  Zach’s brother Chad gave the sweetest blessing.  Benny [Clark’s older brother] and I got to cuddle with Clark for a while after the meeting.  Definitely the highlight of my Sunday afternoon.

photo 1

Sunday after we returned home from party central in Layton, we had our big Sunday dinner.  Zach had been asking for Surf N’ Turf night [thank you Jersey Shore] and that’s exactly what he got.  Hendo Surf N’ Turf night with delicious steak grilled by the “Crazy Legs” Grillmaster and fish broiled by yours truly.  We make a pretty good team when it comes to Hendo Surf N’ Turf Night.

photo 2

The weekend couldn’t have been better.  Friends, family, too much food, and dreamy weather.  We could get used to this.

As a Matter of Maps

Our office is COVERED in maps.  Manhattan, Chicago (the most recent purchase), San Francisco that I saw on a Graphic Design Blog, and so on…

I finally got our “gallery wall” all hung up while Zach was gone.  All I need now is the window shade, and that room is complete.  We’ve lived in this house for two years, next week…and we only have one room completely finished.  At least it is a start!

Weekend, NOTED

After being in Vegas the majority of the week, all I wanted to do this weekend was spend as much time as I could with Zach.

Friday, after watching portions of the Royal Wedding (which Zach thought was a movie coming into theaters…?) when I got home, Zach and I decided to do a Pajama Movie.

Royal Wedding Print Via Etsy

There is a theater that is near our house that we go to often, mostly because the movies are really cheap (and they are new releases, not like the Dollar Theater).  We got dressed in our “comfy cozies” (as my niece Lola would call them) and ate dinner at home before we went to Soul Surfer.  Such a cute movie, which is obviously a true story.  Zach actually requested to go to this film, and was immediately itching to go surfing again.

Saturday I finally got all the pieces of my stationery.  I have been wanting to order custom stationery for months.  (It’s one of those MANY things on my To-Do List.)  I found options that I LOVED at one of my favorite online paper sources, but not a whole suite I wanted to order.  So…I ordered some Graphic Art pieces and made some of my own to match.  The pieces I printed off myself are not as great of quality, but I’ll take ’em!

Later that afternoon was my nephew Charlie’s baptism.  We are so proud of him and his decision to get baptized!  Char has a way with the ladies, and looked so adorable in his little suit.  It was fun visiting with family after the baptism and some of us even attended a movie after – the always entertaining Fast Five.  Honestly, Zach and I were more entertained with the people in the theater than with the actual plot of the show.  Regardless, we loved being with Zach’s brothers and their wives.  It’s always a good laugh!

P.S. Congrats to all our friends that have graduated/are graduating this week!  So excited for you all!!!
